When you first get a glimpse of the water at Utah’s Sand Hollow State Park, it’s easy to see why the Pro Watercross selection committee was eager to make it one of the host sites for the 2015 tour. The blue water and contrasting red sandstone give the reservoir a striking beauty that’s unique to the St. George and Zion National Park area.
“After experiencing Sand Hollow Reservoir for ourselves, we’re confident it’s going to be one of the tour’s favorite destinations,” said Nicholas Handler, Pro Watercross managing director.
The Pro Watercross Tour is the country’s leading personal watercraft racing circuits and attracts some of the world’s top watercraft athletes. The St. George portion of the seven-week event will take place the weekend of June 27-28 and will feature closed-course racing and action-packed freestyle competitions. The athletes push themselves—and the engines on their personal watercrafts—to the extreme and reach speeds topping 85 miles per hour.
“This is the Supercross of personal watercraft racing,” Handler said. “The course is designed to keep the high-speed action close to the fans on the beach.”
It’s not just the stunning scenery that has the Pro Watercross Tour excited about visiting St. George. The location provides easy access to an endless list of recreational activities, including adjoining sand dunes that take ATV and OHV riding to a new level of adventure.
“The 45-minute drive to Zion National Park is also very appealing,” Handler said. “Our competitors and their families are interested in exploring the outdoors and finding new recreational experiences.”
Other nearby activities include world-class mountain biking; hiking at some of the nation’s most popular state and national parks; canyoneering among towering crimson cliffs; and family-friendly attractions in St. George’s picturesque downtown.
Residents and visitors to St. George during the two-day event are welcome to attend the Pro Watercross Tour and cheer on the athletes. (The audience could end up on TV as part of a nationwide television broadcast!) Before and after the races, fans frequently get to interact with the competitors and request autographs.
Sounds like the perfect weekend of adventure and scenery for both the athletes and the spectators. Let’s give the Pro Watercross Tour a big welcome to St. George, Utah!
