Augustine’s Dream – a devised work of aerial-dance-theatre, Augustine’s Dream is a meditation on gender, power, and performance. Performed on Aerial Silks, Augustine explores the “spectacle” of female “hysteria” across time: the “hysterical” patients of 19th century neurologist Dr. Jean Martin Charcot, whose symptoms were exhibited every week at the doctor’s Tuesday Lectures in Paris’ Salpetriere hospital – the convulsant public performances of Christ’s passion by the medieval Catholic mystic, Elizabeth of Spalbeek – the “demonic possession” of the teenage girls of the Salem Witch Trails. Directed by Kathryn Mederos Syssoyeva and Janette Hough, with students of the DSU Department of Theatre. Augustine’s Dream is a Work-in-Progress; this public showing is in the form of an open rehearsal with talkback.
