This film was deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant in 1995 by the United States Library of Congress. It was also selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.Set in Modesto, California in 1962 post- World War and baby boomers were in to cruising around and rock and roll in their teenage years. Curt Henderson and Steve Bolander are about to go off to college in the Northeastern United States. Curt is having second thoughts, Steve breaks up with Laurie (Curt's sister) before going off to college. This group of teens have gone through a lot in one night, more then most would have to go through.The first premiere was on August 2nd 1973 at the Locarno International Film Festival. George Lucas director and co-writer had been turned down by many companies before finally having Universal Pictures finance the film.
