" Above the Cataclysm" Gallery Show

Tuesday, March 07, 2017

Start: 10:00 am
Length: 8 hrs

Art now has cause to question its own authenticity. Diffident conjecture abandons habit as mark making becomes neglected in favor of permanent erasures. Unfinished thoughts and self effacing bones of a painting raise the question; When is a work of art finished? Provisional work is that which appears to be, in some way, incomplete. Art work that plays with forms of provisionality challenge the conventional craft and skills employed by the masters, grapple with a piece's ontology, engage with unassuming materials, and/or retain an air of mystery or awkwardness in the displayed work. The origins of the investigation is traceable through centuries of artistic process but was perhaps first notably exploited with the artists of the early 20th century working through archaic mediums in a modern age of mass produced images and a cluttered array of pictures. In this exhibition the pieces express this discord in what might be called the death of painting. The work and processes of current working artists gives the practice continual resurrection through re-investigation of painting in ways that give it new embodiment.
